In 2004, Ted Wachtel, President of the International Institute of Restorative Practices developed his Fundamental Hypothesis. He said,
“Human beings are the happiest, healthiest and most likely to make positive changes in their behavior when those in authority do things with them rather than to them or for them.”

In 2003, Paul McCold and Ted Wachtel created The Social “Discipline ” Window that features four approaches to behavioral boundaries and social norms featuring combinations of high or low support or high or low control.
The four approaches are: To, Not, For, and With.
Various researchers became concerned about terminology, especially the word control. Gateway to Restorative Practices uses the Social “Engagement” Window with levels of accountability and support.
