Participants begin seminar 2 by creating group presentations on Restorative Practices values and principles of restorative discipline. The training features the Restorative Practices pyramid using a 3-tiered multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) model. Tier 1 action strategies for all students offer a proactive focus on school-wide prevention by building relationships and developing community. Tier 1 responses include affective statements, restorative questions, restorative apologies, and proactive circles including check-in circles, community building, and academic content circles.
Participants engage in Tier 2 strategies that address the needs of about 15% of students with challenging behaviors by focusing on managing difficulties by addressing conflict and harm. Tier 2 action strategies include peer mediation, problem-solving circles, reparation of harm, and small impromptu conferences. Application in Action activities are included such as analyzing classroom/school discipline policies and completing the first two of six steps in their Year 1 Action Plan.
